Chapter 5 - The Monster Returns

Our fragile peace was violently shattered on a rainy Tuesday evening.

I was cooking dinner while the boys were watching a movie in the living room.

Suddenly, a heavy, aggressive pounding echoed from the front door.

I froze, instantly recognizing the terrifying rhythm of those knocks.

It was my abusive ex-husband, David, whom I had fled from nine months ago.

He had finally tracked down my location, likely tipped off by Martha's public arrest.

"Open the door, Claire!" David shouted, his voice slurred with alcohol and rage.

"You cannot keep my sons away from me!"

Panic gripped my throat as I rushed into the living room to shield my children.

Caleb grabbed his little brother, pulling him behind the heavy oak bookshelf.

"Call the police, Mom," Caleb whispered, his eyes wide with absolute terror.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, my fingers shaking uncontrollably.

David began kicking the front door, the wooden frame splintering under his heavy boots.

I knew the old locks would not hold for much longer.

Suddenly, the back door swung open, and Abigail rushed into the kitchen.

She had seen David's truck pull into the driveway from her hotel room across the street.

Abigail did not panic; instead, she grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet from the stove.

"Get the boys upstairs and lock the bedroom door," Abigail ordered with fierce authority.

"I am not letting another monster take my family away from me."

I hesitated, terrified that David would hurt her if he broke through.

"Go, now!" she shouted, pointing toward the staircase.

I grabbed my sons and ran, praying that the police would arrive in time.
