Chapter 10 - The True Meaning of Home

A full year has passed since the morning the moving truck pulled into my driveway.
The house looks completely different now, reflecting the vibrant energy of the people living inside it.
I finally found a wonderful job working as a counselor for survivors of domestic abuse.
I use my own painful experiences to help other women find the courage to escape and rebuild.
David is serving his sentence in a maximum-security prison, completely out of our lives.
Martha remains incarcerated in Florida, and her letters go straight into our fireplace unopened.
Tonight, we are celebrating Abigail's sixtieth birthday with a special family dinner.
The dining room table is covered with her favorite foods, baked by Caleb and his brother.
I raise my glass of wine, gently tapping it against my spoon to get everyone's attention.
"To the woman who gave me life, and then fought a war to give it back to me," I say clearly.
"Happy birthday, Mom."
Abigail smiles, wiping a happy tear from her eye as the boys cheer loudly.
Hearing me call her "Mom" still makes her eyes shine with absolute joy.
The journey to find each other was filled with unimaginable pain, deception, and heartbreak.
But sitting here under the warm glow of the chandelier, none of that matters anymore.
We broke the cycle of abuse and forged a new legacy based on fierce loyalty.
I look around the table at my beautiful, chaotic, and perfectly imperfect family.
The woman who tried to sell this house thought she was taking everything from me.

Instead, she accidentally handed me the key to everything I ever wanted.
We are finally home, and no one will ever force us to leave again.
