Chapter 1 - The Stranger on the Porch

The police officer stepped onto the wooden porch with a stern expression.
Abigail Reed stood beside him, her hands trembling as she clutched a yellowed legal document.
I stared at her face, realizing she had my exact eye shape and the same natural wave in her hair.
Hannah and Paul backed away, sensing the explosive tension filling the morning air.
"Are you Claire?" the woman asked, her voice cracking with decades of unshed tears.
I nodded slowly, unable to form a single word as my phone remained clutched to my ear.
My mother was screaming through the speaker, begging me to run inside and lock the doors.
I ignored her frantic pleas and ended the call, cutting off the woman who had lied to me for my entire life.
The police officer stepped forward and introduced himself as Detective Miller.
He explained that the sale of the house was completely fraudulent and illegal.
"Martha did not have the right to sell this property," the detective stated clearly.
"Half of this estate belongs to Abigail, and her signature was forged on the closing documents."
I looked at Abigail, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.
"Who are you?" I whispered, though deep down, my soul already knew the terrifying answer.
Abigail took a hesitant step closer, her eyes scanning my face as if memorizing my features.
"I am your biological mother, Claire," she said softly.
"Martha was my older sister, and thirty years ago, she took you away from me."
The porch spun around me as the horrific truth finally crashed into my reality.
The woman who raised me had stolen my entire life.
Caleb grabbed my hand, pulling me back from the edge of a total collapse.
