Chapter 4 - The Lockbox Secrets

We needed to clear out Martha's remaining belongings from the attic.

Abigail offered to help me, knowing the task would be emotionally draining.

The attic was filled with dusty boxes, old winter coats, and forgotten holiday decorations.

As we moved a heavy dresser, I noticed a loose floorboard near the chimney.

I pried it open with a screwdriver, revealing a small, rusted metal lockbox.

My heart raced as I brought the box down to the kitchen table.

We broke the lock with a hammer, eager to uncover the last of my father's secrets.

Inside the box was a stack of letters, a thick journal, and my original birth certificate.

My real name was written in dark ink: Clara Reed.

Abigail ran her fingers over the document, sobbing quietly at the sight of her stolen history.

I opened the journal, recognizing my father's messy, slanted handwriting.

The entries detailed his overwhelming guilt for helping Martha steal a child.

He wrote about how Martha constantly threatened to leave him if he ever confessed to the police.

"I am a coward," the final entry read, dated just a week before his fatal heart attack.

"I am leaving half the house to Abigail, hoping it will force the truth into the light when I am gone."

He had been a weak man, but his final act of defiance had saved my life.

I threw the journal into the trash, refusing to carry his heavy guilt anymore.

Abigail placed her hand over mine, offering a warm, reassuring smile.

"We cannot change the past, Clara," she said, using my real name for the first time.

"But we can build a beautiful future in this house together."

For the first time in my life, I truly felt like I was home.
