Chapter 4 - The Federal Subpoena

The raid on Julian’s logistics company was a masterclass in federal precision. Dozens of agents wearing windbreakers had stormed the glass-fronted skyscraper, ordering employees to step away from their computers. Yellow crime scene tape was slapped across Julian’s executive suite.

The audio recording I had provided didn't just capture Beatrice’s physical attack; it provided the exact motive. Beatrice had screamed about paying off federal auditors to keep his fleet running. The FBI quickly discovered that Julian’s shipping trucks had been failing safety inspections for years, resulting in dangerous highway accidents. To avoid being shut down by the Department of Transportation, Julian had been funneling cash to corrupt inspectors through shell companies.

By the time Julian and Beatrice were dragged into the courtroom for their bail hearing, the federal prosecutor was sitting next to the district attorney.

I watched the hearing via a secure video link from my hospital bed. My neck and shoulder were heavily bandaged, the painkillers making the edges of the screen blur, but my mind was crystal clear.

“Your Honor,” the federal prosecutor stood up, adjusting his glasses. “The defendants are not merely facing state charges for a horrific domestic attack. The audio evidence provided by the victim has triggered a massive federal indictment for wire fraud, bribery of federal officials, and racketeering. Julian Sterling was extorting his wife to cover up federal crimes.”

Julian stared at the monitor showing my face in the hospital bed. His arrogant sneer was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow, frantic stare of a cornered rat.

“The government considers both defendants extreme flight risks, given their hidden offshore accounts,” the prosecutor continued. “We request that bail be denied.”

The judge, a stern woman with zero tolerance for wealthy entitlement, slammed her gavel. “Bail is denied. The defendants will be remanded to the county detention center pending trial.”

Beatrice let out a high-pitched, theatrical wail and collapsed onto the defense table. Julian just stared at me through the camera, finally realizing the absolute magnitude of his destruction.
