Chapter 16 - Beatrice’s Final Stand

Beatrice’s defense strategy was equally disastrous. Her attorney attempted to paint her as a fiercely protective mother who suffered a temporary psychotic break due to the stress of her son’s failing business.
But Beatrice couldn't hide her true nature on the stand. When the prosecutor questioned her, her innate arrogance and superiority complex flared up instantly.
“Mrs. Sterling,” the prosecutor asked, “did you purchase the cast-iron skillet specifically because it retains heat longer than aluminum, making the oil hotter?”
“I purchased it because I am a woman of quality who appreciates fine cookware,” Beatrice snapped, rolling her eyes. “Unlike Clara, who couldn't even cook a proper meal for my son.”
“So you admit you were fully aware of the oil's temperature when you threw it at your daughter-in-law?”
“She was ruining my son’s life!” Beatrice shrieked, losing all composure. “She sat on millions of dollars while Julian suffered! She was a greedy, stubborn, ungrateful girl! She deserved to be taught a lesson in respect!”
The entire courtroom gasped. She had just confessed to premeditated malice aforethought in front of twelve jurors and a highly unforgiving judge.

Her attorney buried his face in his hands.
“No further questions, Your Honor,” the prosecutor said quietly, stepping away from the podium. He didn't need to ask anything else. Beatrice had just hammered the final nail into her own coffin. She was a vicious, entitled monster, and she had just proudly shown the jury her true face.
