Chapter 2 - The Country Club Spectacle

Across town, the Oakridge Country Club was a beacon of old money and arrogant privilege. Julian stood at the head of a mahogany dining table, wearing a perfectly tailored Italian suit, looking appropriately solemn. Beatrice sat to his right, wearing her signature pearls, dabbing at dry eyes with a linen napkin.
“Clara is resting,” Julian told the table of wealthy logistics investors, his voice dripping with rehearsed sorrow. “The doctors say it was a terrible kitchen mishap. But I am committed to keeping the company afloat during this personal tragedy. I just need a temporary bridge loan while her assets are untangled.”
Before the investors could murmur their sympathies, the heavy oak doors of the private dining room burst open.
Four uniformed police officers, flanked by two plainclothes detectives, strode into the room. The ambient chatter of the country club died instantly. Waiters froze with silver trays suspended in the air.
“Julian Sterling?” the lead detective barked, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers.
Julian’s face flushed with immediate indignation. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private event! Do you know who I am?”
“We know exactly who you are,” the detective said, stepping forward and grabbing Julian’s wrist, twisting it sharply behind his back. The sound of steel handcuffs clicking into place made several investors gasp in horror. “You are under arrest for extortion, conspiracy, and aggravated domestic assault.”
Beatrice leaped from her chair, her face contorting in rage. “Take your hands off my son! My daughter-in-law is a hysterical, clumsy woman! This is an outrage! I’ll have your badges!”
A female officer stepped directly in front of Beatrice, unholstering her cuffs. “Beatrice Sterling, you are under arrest for first-degree aggravated assault and attempted murder. Turn around and put your hands behind your back.”

“Attempted murder?!” Beatrice shrieked as the officer forced her wrists together.
As they were marched through the main dining room, past the staring eyes of every socialite, rival, and business partner they had spent years trying to impress, Julian’s polished facade completely crumbled. The empire of lies he had built was already burning to the ground.
