Chapter 19 - The Ashes Settled

With Julian and Beatrice permanently locked away, the massive undertaking of cleaning up their wreckage began.
The federal government seized Julian’s remaining personal assets, auctioning off his luxury cars, his country club shares, and the penthouse he had bought for his mistress. The proceeds were distributed to the family of the truck driver who had died in the covered-up accident, and to the various creditors Julian had defrauded.
Mr. Vance and I finalized the restructuring of my grandfather’s estate.
“The commercial properties are thriving under the new management team,” Vance told me as we sat in my new, sunlit office in downtown Chicago. “And the software patents have just secured a massive licensing deal with a major tech firm. Your net worth has tripled since the divorce, Clara.”
“I don't care about the money, Arthur,” I said honestly, looking out at the city skyline. “I care about what the money can do.”
I used a significant portion of the new profits to establish a foundation for victims of domestic abuse and financial extortion. We provided legal representation, safe housing, and medical care for women who were trapped by wealthy, powerful abusers. We gave them the armor they needed to fight back.
