Chapter 12 - The Finalized Divorce

The civil courtroom was quiet, almost peaceful, compared to the raging criminal investigations.

I sat at the plaintiff's table beside Mr. Vance, wearing a tailored navy suit. The scarring on my neck was visible, but I no longer tried to hide it with scarves. I wore it as a testament to my survival.

Julian was brought into the courtroom by two armed bailiffs. He looked completely destroyed. The news of his mother’s counter-confession regarding the fatal truck crash had hit him the day before. He was now facing federal manslaughter charges on top of everything else. His plea deal was dead in the water.

The family court judge looked over the massive stack of documents detailing the abuse, the fraud, and the asset protection clauses.

“Mr. Sterling,” the judge addressed Julian, her voice laced with disdain. “Given your felony indictments and the overwhelming evidence of severe domestic abuse and financial extortion, this court is granting the divorce petition with extreme prejudice.”

Julian stared at the floor, hollow and defeated.

“Mrs. Sterling will retain one hundred percent of her pre-marital assets, her inherited patents, and the commercial real estate,” the judge continued. “Furthermore, the court orders you to pay full restitution for her medical bills out of whatever liquidated assets remain from your bankruptcy.”

“I have nothing left,” Julian mumbled, his voice cracking.

“That is not the concern of this court,” the judge snapped. “You are officially divorced, Mrs. Sterling. You are free.”

The gavel banged. The sharp, wooden crack echoed through the courtroom like a gunshot. The heavy, suffocating chain that had bound me to Julian for five years shattered into dust. I stood up, shook Mr. Vance’s hand, and walked out of the courtroom without giving my ex-husband a single backward glance.
