Chapter 5 - The Siege Begins

By noon the next day, the Sterlings began making good on their threats.
I went to buy groceries, only to find my credit cards were universally declined.
I checked my banking app and saw that all my joint accounts had been completely drained.
Julian had transferred every cent to an offshore trust.
Unfortunately for him, I was entirely self-made before we married.
My private high-yield savings account, completely untouched by his name, was fully funded.
I smiled as I paid for my groceries in cash.
When I returned home, I found my front porch covered in red paint.
The words "DEAD WITCH" were scrawled across my beautiful oak door.
My neighbors were staring, whispering behind their manicured hedges.
I simply pulled out my phone, took a picture, and sent it to my new FBI contact.
Agent Harrison had agreed to meet me later that evening.
Suddenly, my phone rang with an unknown number.
I answered it, putting it on speaker.
"I hope you like the new paint job," Eleanor’s venomous voice purred.
"Drop the charges against my son, or next time, the paint will be your actual blood."
I laughed, a sharp, cold sound that caught her completely off guard.
"You should really save your energy for finding a good defense attorney, Eleanor," I replied.
"I hear federal prison doesn't have very comfortable beds."
I hung up before she could respond.
