Chapter 8 - The Damning Email

The defense's final, desperate move was to call my mother to the witness stand.

They hoped she could provide a sympathetic character witness for her beloved niece and her brother.

My mother walked to the stand slowly, looking older and far more fragile than I remembered.

She avoided looking at me as she placed her hand on the Bible and swore to tell the truth.

The defense attorney asked her gentle questions, trying to paint our family as a loving unit torn apart by a misunderstanding.

"Did Sarah ever express jealousy toward Melissa's impending marriage?" the attorney asked softly.

"Yes, she was very bitter," my mother lied smoothly, finding her rhythm.

"She hated that Melissa was happy while she was still grieving her husband."

I squeezed Grant's hand tightly, feeling sick to my stomach as she continued to perjure herself.

Then, the prosecutor stood up for cross-examination, holding a large stack of printed emails.

"Ma'am, you claim that you love your grandson very much, is that correct?" the prosecutor asked sharply.

"Of course I do, he is my flesh and blood," my mother replied, raising her chin defensively.

"Then why did you send this email to your brother three days before the engagement dinner?"

The prosecutor handed the document to the judge and read it out loud for the entire courtroom to hear.

"The email says: 'We need to move the money into the offshore account before Sarah gets suspicious. Melissa’s plan with the CPS report is our only way out. Just make sure the crippled boy doesn’t ruin the aesthetic of the wedding photos first.'"

The entire courtroom went dead silent as the sheer evil of her words hung heavily in the air.

My mother's face drained of all color, and she began to hyperventilate on the stand.

"I... I didn't mean it like that," she stammered, completely trapped by her own written confession.

"You knew exactly what you were doing," the prosecutor fired back relentlessly.

"You actively participated in the financial ruin and attempted framing of your own disabled grandson."

My mother broke down into hysterical, ugly sobs, completely unable to answer any more questions.

The judge ordered a brief recess, but the damage was already permanently done.

My mother had completely destroyed herself and handed the prosecution the final nail in the coffin.

I looked at the defense table and saw my uncle burying his face in his hands, knowing their entire empire had fallen.
