Chapter 1 - The Sinister Plot

The silence on the phone was heavier than anything I had ever experienced in my entire life.

My mother’s voice trembled, but not out of guilt or remorse.

She was trembling because she had finally been caught in a web of her own malicious lies.

I gripped the plastic bag containing the prescription pills so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white.

"What do you mean he wasn't supposed to find it yet?" I asked, my voice dangerously low and steady.

My mother stammered, frantically trying to string together a coherent sentence to save herself.

In the background, I could hear Melissa crying hysterically, throwing what sounded like a massive tantrum.

"Sarah, please just listen to me for one second," my mother pleaded desperately over the phone.

"Melissa was just playing a silly prank, she never meant to actually hurt Evan."

I felt a sudden, violent surge of adrenaline rush through my entire body.

"A prank?" I repeated, my voice rising in volume as rage took over.

"She planted stolen prescription narcotics in my fourteen-year-old disabled son's wheelchair!"

"You gave her access to his chair last week when you pretended you wanted to take him to the park."

"You both colluded to frame my child with stolen drugs."

My mother let out a frustrated sigh, as if I was the one being unreasonable.

"It wasn't for Evan, you idiot, it was for you," she finally snapped, revealing the ugly truth.

"Melissa was going to call Child Protective Services tomorrow morning."

"She was going to tell them you were a drug addict hiding pills in your son's medical equipment."

The room spun around me as the sheer magnitude of their evil plan fully set in.

They wanted to have Evan taken away from me, all because of Melissa's petty jealousy and vindictive nature.

"I am calling the police right now," I said firmly, refusing to let them get away with this.

"If you do that, you will destroy this family forever!" my mother screamed through the speaker.

"This family destroyed itself tonight," I replied before hanging up and blocking her number completely.

I looked over at Evan, who was sitting quietly in the living room, watching me with wide, worried eyes.

I walked over to him, knelt down, and wrapped my arms tightly around his fragile shoulders.

"No one is ever going to hurt you or take you away from me," I promised him softly.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Grant's number.

He answered on the first ring, his voice sounding completely drained and exhausted.

"Grant, we need to go to the police station right now," I told him without any hesitation.

"I have the pills, and I know exactly what they were planning to do to me."

"I'm already in my car," Grant replied, his tone shifting to one of absolute determination.

"I will be at your house in ten minutes, and we will end this nightmare together."
