Chapter 7 - The Trial Begins

Six months later, the criminal trial against Melissa and my uncle officially began.

The courthouse was packed with reporters, curious onlookers, and members of my fractured family.

I sat in the front row right next to Grant, who had become a fiercely loyal friend to both me and Evan.

Melissa sat at the defense table, looking significantly thinner and stripped of all her usual glamour.

She refused to make eye contact with me, staring down at her legal notepad with a hard, bitter expression.

My uncle looked exhausted, his expensive suits hanging loosely on his stressed frame.

The prosecution started by calling Detective Harris to the stand to lay out the events of the engagement dinner.

When the prosecutor played the security footage from the restaurant, a collective gasp echoed through the courtroom.

Watching Melissa sneak the drugs into a disabled teenager's wheelchair on a massive screen was incredibly damning.

Melissa’s defense attorney tried to argue that she was suffering from severe wedding anxiety and a temporary mental breakdown.

He claimed that the pressure of the event made her act irrationally and that she never truly intended to hurt Evan.

But the prosecutor quickly dismantled that pathetic defense during cross-examination.

He brought out the financial records that Mr. Sterling had uncovered, proving the long-term embezzlement.

"This was not a temporary breakdown, ladies and gentlemen," the prosecutor announced to the jury.

"This was a calculated, cold-blooded conspiracy to frame an innocent mother and steal a disabled child's inheritance."

The jury looked at Melissa with visible disgust, clearly completely unsympathetic to her wealthy, privileged tears.

Grant took the stand next, testifying about the stolen pills and Melissa’s history of cruel behavior toward Evan.

His testimony was calm, articulate, and completely devastating to Melissa’s rapidly crumbling defense.

"She lied to me about the venue’s accessibility, she insulted a child’s hard work, and she stole my medication to commit a felony," Grant stated clearly.

"She is a danger to society and a master manipulator."

Melissa finally snapped, jumping out of her chair and pointing a shaking finger at Grant.

"You ruined my life!" she screamed, her face contorted in absolute rage.

"You were supposed to marry me and fix my family's debts!"

The judge immediately slammed his gavel, ordering the bailiffs to restrain her and force her back into her seat.

Her outburst had just proven the prosecution's entire case.

She was not a victim; she was a greedy, vindictive criminal.
