Chapter 5 - Uncovering the Embezzlement

A few days later, I sat in the polished mahogany office of Mr. Sterling, my late husband’s estate lawyer.

I had requested an emergency meeting after my mother’s careless comments on my front porch.

Mr. Sterling poured me a cup of coffee and adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses.

"I am so sorry to hear about the horrific events of the past week, Sarah," he began gently.

"I reviewed the terms of Evan's trust fund, as you requested, and I found something highly concerning."

He opened a thick manila folder and slid a series of bank statements across the desk.

"When your husband passed away, he appointed your uncle as a secondary trustee, in the event that you were incapacitated."

"It was a standard clause meant to protect Evan, but it appears your uncle found a loophole."

I looked down at the highlighted numbers, my stomach dropping as I read the massive withdrawals.

"What am I looking at?" I asked, tracing a line that showed a fifty-thousand-dollar transfer.

"Your uncle has been taking out large 'administrative loans' against the trust for the past three years," the lawyer explained.

"He used the money to fund Melissa's lavish lifestyle, buy her cars, and pay for her expensive wedding planner."

"He was completely draining Evan's future to spoil his own daughter."

I felt a sudden wave of nausea as the entire puzzle finally snapped together perfectly.

"He knew that when Evan turns eighteen, he will gain full control of the remaining trust," I realized out loud.

"Exactly," Mr. Sterling nodded grimly.

"If Evan takes control, the accounts will be audited, and your uncle's massive theft will be exposed immediately."

"They were running out of time."

"That is why they needed you out of the picture right now."

"If you were arrested for drug possession, your mother would take custody of Evan, and your uncle would remain the trustee."

"They could have legally drained the entire account and left you both with absolutely nothing."

I clenched my fists, feeling a renewed sense of fierce, protective anger.

They hadn't just insulted my son; they had actively plotted to destroy his entire future.

"I want to press federal charges for fraud and embezzlement," I told the lawyer without any hesitation.

"And I want a restraining order filed against every single member of my family."

Mr. Sterling smiled, clearly impressed by my absolute resolve.

"I will have the paperwork drafted before the end of the day, Sarah."

"We are going to make sure they pay back every single penny they stole from your boy."
