Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

Suddenly, my mother lunged forward with a desperate scream.
She grabbed my father's leg, sinking her teeth and nails into his calf like a wild animal.
My father roared in pain, dropping the knife and kicking her brutally in the stomach.
The distraction was all I needed.
I swung my aluminum crutch with every ounce of strength left in my broken body.
The metal bar cracked across Kevin’s wrist, forcing him to drop the pistol.
The gun clattered across the concrete floor, sliding into the darkness.
Kevin cursed and tackled me to the ground, his hands wrapping tightly around my throat.
I gasped for air, thrashing wildly as my vision began to fill with black spots.
He was too strong, and my weakened leg made it impossible to push him off.
"I'm going to finish this!" Kevin screamed, squeezing my neck harder.
I reached out blindly, my fingers brushing against cold, wet metal on the floor.
It was the heavy pipe my father had kicked earlier.
I gripped it tightly and smashed it directly into the side of Kevin's head.

He groaned and collapsed sideways, his grip releasing completely.
I rolled over, coughing violently and gasping for the damp warehouse air.
