Chapter 2 - The Escape

Ramirez escorted us out through the loading dock of the rehabilitation center.
The cool Colorado air hit my face, but it did nothing to calm my racing heart.
He bundled us into the back of an unmarked police cruiser, keeping his hand on his service weapon.
"I am taking you to a safe house until we can locate your husband and your children," Ramirez said.
I leaned my head against the cold glass of the window, fighting back tears of absolute rage.
Kevin had looked me in the eyes and promised to love me forever on our wedding day.
Now, I realized he had been plotting my murder with my own family.
Dana sat silently beside me, clutching the dashboard camera hard drive in her lap.
"Why are you helping me, Dana?" I asked, my voice cracking in the quiet car.
She did not look at me for a long time.
When she finally turned, her eyes were filled with a dark, haunted sorrow.
"My brother died in a hit-and-run accident five years ago," she confessed softly.
"The insurance company paid out a massive settlement to his widow, but I always knew something was wrong."
"I have been tracking a fraud ring for years, trying to prove they stage accidents for profit."
"Your husband's name showed up on a financial ledger I intercepted last month."

I gasped, realizing that Dana was not just a random bystander on a rural road.
She was a private investigator who had been tailing Kevin on the night he tried to kill me.
