Chapter 7 - The Father Returns

Before Kevin could pull the trigger, the side door of the warehouse slammed open.
My father walked in, looking older, weather-beaten, and absolutely ruthless.
He was dragging my mother by her arm, pushing her roughly onto the concrete floor.
"She tried to call the police," my father growled, kicking a stray pipe across the room.
"She suddenly grew a conscience because she didn't want to hurt the grandchildren."
My mother looked up at me, her face bruised and her eyes streaming with tears.
"I'm sorry, Jessica," she sobbed, clutching her ribs.
"I only agreed to the insurance fraud, I never wanted them to actually kill you."
"I thought they were just going to hide you away until the money cleared."
I stared at her in sheer disgust, realizing the absolute depth of her delusion.
"Where are my babies?" I demanded, turning my attention back to my resurrected father.
"They are locked in my truck outside," my father said, pulling a massive hunting knife from his belt.
"Kevin, shoot her now, and we can still make the flight out of the country."
Kevin’s hand shook slightly as he kept the gun leveled at my heart.

"Do it!" my father roared, his voice echoing violently off the tin roof.
I closed my eyes, silently praying for my children to forgive me.
