Chapter 5 - The Innocent Question

"Mommy?"

Lily tugged on Maya’s sapphire gown. Her voice carried flawlessly in the dead-quiet garden.

"Yes, sweetheart?" Maya whispered, though the entire section could hear her.

Lily pointed a small, chubby finger directly at the altar. "Why does that man crying up there look exactly like Leo and Lucas?"

A collective, horrified gasp ripped through the three hundred guests.

At the altar, Sloane froze, turning slowly to follow the little girl’s pointing finger. She looked at Lily, then at the two little boys sitting next to her, and finally, at Tristan. The resemblance was not subtle. It was undeniable.

Tristan dropped Sloane’s hands. He looked like he was going to vomit.

"What... what is she talking about?" Sloane demanded, her voice trembling. "Tristan, who are those children?"

Eleanor leaped from her front-row seat, her composure completely shattered. "Security! Remove them! They are trespassing and causing a disturbance!"

Maya didn't move. Alexander simply placed a protective hand on the back of Maya’s chair and leveled a freezing glare at the approaching security guards, stopping them in their tracks.

"No one is going anywhere," Sloane said, her voice suddenly sharp and commanding. She hiked up her heavy lace skirt and marched down the steps of the altar, walking directly toward Maya’s row.

"Sloane, wait!" Tristan pleaded, finally finding his voice, but she ignored him.

Sloane stood in front of the triplets, her eyes scanning their faces. The undeniable Sterling hazel eyes stared right back at her. She looked up at Maya.

"Are these his?" Sloane asked, her voice deadly calm.

"Yes," Maya said, her voice steady and clear. "Triplets. Born three and a half years ago."
