Chapter 4 - The Altar of Lies

The ceremony took place under a massive floral arch facing the rolling vineyards. The guest list was a who's-who of California's elite.

Maya, Alexander, and the triplets sat in the fourth row. Eleanor had tried to have them moved to the back, but Alexander had quietly informed the ushers that if they were moved, his massive corporate accounts at the Sterling's primary bank would be moved by Monday. They stayed exactly where they were.

The orchestral music swelled. Sloane walked down the aisle, a vision in white lace and diamonds. She looked happy, oblivious to the storm brewing just a few rows behind her.

When she reached the altar, she took Tristan’s hands. Tristan, however, looked like he was facing a firing squad. He was sweating, his eyes constantly darting toward the fourth row.

The officiant began speaking about love, legacy, and the joining of two great families. He spoke of honesty and the future.

"If anyone here knows any reason why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony, speak now or forever hold your peace," the officiant intoned, a traditional formality that no one ever expected to be answered.

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the crowd.

And in that silence, a small, clear voice rang out.
