Chapter 16 - The Final Verdict

Two weeks later, we sat together in the front row of the Manhattan Federal Courthouse. It was the sentencing hearing for both Eleanor Vance and Victoria Sterling.

I sat with my posture straight, holding Julian’s hand firmly in my lap. His grip was tight, his thumb rubbing rhythmic circles against my skin as the federal judge delivered his scathing condemnation of their actions.

"The court finds the actions of the defendants to be morally reprehensible and legally devastating," the judge’s voice echoed through the wood-paneled courtroom. "To conspire against a medically vulnerable woman, to falsify medical records, and to actively deprive a father of his lawful children for five years demonstrates a complete disregard for human life and the rule of law."

The sentence was swift and merciless. Eleanor Vance was sentenced to four years in a federal minimum-security facility, her advanced age being the only factor that spared her a longer term. Victoria Sterling received five years in a federal correctional institution for wire fraud, identity theft, and the attempted assault in Tribeca.

As the bailiffs placed handcuffs on the women, Eleanor turned her head slowly to look back at us. Her eyes, once so full of contempt and superiority, were now vacant and broken. She looked at Julian, her lips moving in a silent, desperate I'm sorry, but Julian didn't flinch. He didn't nod. He simply looked at the woman who had birthed him with the cold, detached gaze of a man who had already mourned her death years ago.

He stood up, pulling me gently to my feet with him. "Let's go home, Clara," he whispered in my ear. "Our children are waiting for us."

We walked out of the courtroom together, hand in hand, stepping out into the bright Manhattan sunshine. The reporters were there, as always, shouting questions about the verdict, but neither of us said a word. We didn't need to justify our lives to the press anymore. The justice system had spoken, the truth was permanently etched in the public record, and our family was finally secure.
