Chapter 15 - Shadows of the Past

Just when I thought the past was entirely buried, a ghost came back to haunt us.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. I was leaving the Purely Petals flagship store in Tribeca when a woman stepped out of the shadows of an alleyway, blocking my path to my car. She was wearing a trench coat, her face partially hidden by a wide-brimmed hat, but I recognized the posture immediately.
It was Victoria Sterling.
She looked nothing like the glamorous heiress who had sneered at me across the table at The Aurelia six months ago. Her face was gaunt, her eyes hollow and dark with exhaustion, and her clothes looked wrinkled and worn. The criminal charges had destroyed her social standing, and her father had reportedly cut her off financially to save the Sterling brand from complete ruin.
"You took everything from me," Victoria whispered, her voice raspy and shaking with an unsettling, desperate energy. She thrust her hand into her coat pocket. "My friends won't speak to me. My family disowned me. I'm facing three years in federal prison because of your little tape recording!"
My driver, David, was opening the rear door of my SUV ten feet away. I kept my eyes locked on Victoria's coat pocket, my instincts screaming that she was dangerous.
"You did this to yourself, Victoria," I said calmly, taking a slow, measured step backward toward the street. "You chose to intercept those phone calls. You chose to mock a woman dying in a hospital bed. You are facing the consequences of your own cruelty."
"I should have made sure you never left that hospital!" she screamed, pulling her hand out of her pocket. In her grip was a heavy, silver can of industrial pepper spray, her thumb poised over the trigger as she lunged toward my face.
Before I could even raise my arms to shield my eyes, a blur of movement hit Victoria from the side. It wasn't David. It was Julian, who had just arrived in his car to surprise me for lunch. He grabbed Victoria's wrist with ruthless precision, twisting her arm until the can clattered harmlessly onto the wet pavement.
David rushed forward, pinning Victoria against the brick wall of the alleyway while Julian stepped between us, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me tightly against his chest.

"Are you hurt? Did she touch you?" Julian demanded, his voice trembling with a terrifying rage as he checked my face and arms.
"I'm fine," I breathed, burying my face in his coat, feeling the solid, protective beat of his heart against my cheek. "You were right on time."
