Chapter 8 - Protecting the Innocent

Bringing Lily and Noah into our home changed everything.

The house, once quiet and overshadowed by the betrayal of our son, was suddenly filled with life again. We enrolled them in a local, private school near our estate. We bought them new clothes, set up beautiful bedrooms for them, and most importantly, gave them a home free of screaming, tension, and violence.

The trauma of their parents' arrest was heavy, and we immediately placed them in therapy.

Lily, at nine years old, understood more than she let on. One evening, while Margaret was baking cookies, Lily sat at the kitchen counter and looked at the faint yellow bruise still fading on her grandmother’s arm.

“Mommy did that, didn't she?” Lily asked quietly.

Margaret stopped stirring the batter. She looked at me, then at Lily. She didn't lie. She didn't sugarcoat it to protect Chloe.

“Yes, sweetheart,” Margaret said softly. “She did. But she can't ever hurt me again. And she can't ever hurt you.”

Lily nodded, tears welling in her eyes, and hugged her grandmother tightly.

It was in that moment I knew I had made the right decision. I hadn't just saved my company or my wife; I had broken a cycle of abuse that would have poisoned the next generation.
