Chapter 5 - The Eviction

By Friday morning, the financial reality of their actions hit them like a freight train.

Marcus and Chloe lived in a $2.5 million estate in the suburbs. What they had conveniently forgotten was that the mortgage was held by the Sterling Logistics corporate trust. The cars they drove—a Mercedes SUV and a Porsche—were company fleet vehicles.

At 8:00 AM, tow trucks arrived in their driveway.

I stood on the sidewalk with Thomas and two private security guards, watching as the repo men hitched up the luxury cars.

Chloe ran out of the front door in her silk bathrobe, screaming like a banshee. “You can't do this! I have to take the kids to school! You’re stranding us!”

“The cars belong to the company, Chloe,” I said calmly, sipping my morning coffee from a travel mug. “And you no longer work for the company.”

Marcus stumbled out behind her, looking utterly defeated. “Dad… the corporate cards are all declining. The grocery store wouldn't even let me buy milk this morning.”

“Because your accounts are frozen pending the federal investigation,” Thomas chimed in. “Furthermore, you have exactly thirty days to vacate this property. The company is putting it on the market to recoup the two million dollars you stole.”

Chloe grabbed Marcus by the shirt collar, shaking him. “Do something! He’s your father! Make him stop!”

Marcus just looked at the ground. He had spent his entire life bullying his mother, but faced with real consequences, he was nothing but a coward.

“You have thirty days,” I repeated. Then, I turned my back on them and walked away.
