Chapter 6 - The Arsonist's Ledger

The drive was filled with scanned financial documents, offshore bank account numbers, and email transcripts.

Seven years ago, my father’s real estate company had been entirely bankrupt.

He was millions of dollars in debt to incredibly dangerous people, and his empire was collapsing.

The only asset he had left was an abandoned, heavily insured industrial warehouse on the edge of town.

The documents proved that my father had hired professionals to orchestrate an insurance fraud fire.

But there was also an audio file, labeled with Mark's name.

I clicked play, and my deceased brother-in-law's voice filled the quiet cabin of my car.

Mark had discovered the arson plot and confronted my father about it.

He had threatened to go to the FBI because he refused to let his son grow up funded by dirty money.

The audio recorded my father calmly telling Mark that he was making a terrible mistake.

My father had ordered his men to lock Mark inside the warehouse on the night of the fire.

He burned his own son-in-law alive to silence him and save his precious fortune.

And then, I found the final email on the drive, sent from my sister Vanessa.

It was sent three days after Mark’s funeral.

Vanessa had written to my father, demanding a ten-million-dollar trust fund in exchange for her silence.

She knew her husband had been murdered by our father.

She traded the life of the man she loved for blood money and designer clothes.

Bile rose in my throat, and I opened the car door to vomit onto the pavement.

My family was not just corrupt; they were cold-blooded murderers.

And they had almost killed my innocent daughter to keep their skeletons buried in the ashes.
