Chapter 1 - The Ashes of the Past

My hands shook uncontrollably as I stared at the glossy photographs scattered across my kitchen table.

The harsh yellow glow of the overhead light made the images of the charred warehouse look sickeningly real.

This was the same industrial fire that had supposedly claimed the life of Caleb’s father, Mark, seven years ago.

The official police report had ruled it a tragic electrical accident.

My family had mourned, my parents had paid for a lavish funeral, and my sister Vanessa had inherited a massive life insurance payout.

But as I looked closer at the photos, the narrative began to unravel right before my eyes.

Someone had used a red marker to circle the exterior doors of the warehouse.

Thick, heavy padlocks were visible on the outside of the building, trapping anyone who might have been inside.

Mark hadn’t died in an accident.

He had been murdered.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

I thought about Lily’s agonizing screams on the patio, the smell of scalding coffee, and the terrifying look of panic in Vanessa’s eyes.

Vanessa hadn’t burned my three-year-old daughter because of a simple toy.

She had done it because Lily had found the release latch on that vintage red metal truck.

Whatever was hidden inside that toy was dangerous enough to make a mother violently attack a toddler.

I carefully placed the photographs back into the unmarked manila envelope.

Whoever slid this under my door knew the truth about my family’s dark empire.

They knew that my parents were not the respectable, wealthy socialites they pretended to be.

They were monsters, and they were willing to destroy anyone who threatened their perfect facade.

I walked into the living room and looked at my sweet Lily sleeping on the couch.

Her right arm and shoulder were heavily wrapped in thick, white medical bandages.

The doctors said the burns were severe, but she would eventually heal.

I made a silent, unbreakable promise to her right then and there.

I was going to burn my family’s entire empire to the ground.
