Chapter 2 - The Stolen Evidence

The next morning, I drove straight to the local police precinct to speak with Detective Miller.

He was the officer who had taken my statement while the paramedics were treating Lily at the birthday party.

When I walked into his office, he refused to make eye contact with me.

He shuffled some papers on his desk and let out a long, heavy sigh.

"I'm sorry, Claire, but we are having trouble building a case against your sister," he muttered.

I slammed my hands down on his desk, my blood boiling with absolute rage.

"What are you talking about, there were dozens of witnesses!" I screamed.

He shook his head and claimed that the neighbors who had been recording on their phones suddenly lost their footage.

According to him, the files were corrupted, and the security cameras on my parents' patio had malfunctioned.

I stared at him in disbelief, realizing exactly what was happening.

My father, Richard, had already gotten to them.

His wealth and political connections ran deep in this town, and he had bought the silence of the entire neighborhood.

"And what about Caleb?" I demanded, my voice trembling with fury.

Detective Miller cleared his throat and said child services found no reason to interview the boy.

Vanessa had claimed Caleb was suffering from emotional distress and sent him to an undisclosed location for treatment.

They were hiding him so he couldn't tell anyone what was inside his red toy truck.

I walked out of the police station feeling like I was suffocating in a nightmare.

The law was not going to help me protect my daughter.

If I wanted justice, I was going to have to tear my family apart with my own two hands.

I sat in my car, pulled out my phone, and opened my banking app.

War is expensive, and I was preparing for the biggest battle of my life.
