Chapter 10 - Healing and Justice

It has been exactly one year since the charity gala that destroyed my family's empire.

My father was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.

Vanessa accepted a plea deal, turning on our parents to reduce her sentence, but she will still spend the next fifteen years behind bars.

My mother’s assets were entirely seized by the government to pay restitution to the city and Mark's extended family.

She now lives in a tiny, run-down apartment, completely cut off from the wealth she sold her soul to keep.

As for me, I took full legal custody of Caleb.

He was traumatized, but with aggressive therapy and a lot of patience, the terrified boy I found in that cabin is finally starting to smile again.

He lives with me and Lily in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood far away from the shadows of our past.

Lily's arm healed beautifully, leaving only a faint, silvery scar that reminds me every day of how strong she truly is.

She doesn't remember the pain of the coffee, and she doesn't remember the screaming on the patio.

She just knows that she is loved, protected, and incredibly safe.

Sometimes, I sit on my front porch and watch Caleb and Lily playing in the yard.

I think about the red toy truck that started it all.

It was just a simple piece of metal, but it held the key to our freedom.

I didn't just survive my family.

I burned their kingdom to ashes, and from those ashes, I built a beautiful, safe life for the children who deserved so much better.
