Chapter 7 - Turning the Tables

The CPS worker closed the folder and looked at the police officers.

"This completely changes the context of the complaint," she stated, her tone turning stern.

One of the officers picked up the Disney report, his jaw tightening as he read the details.

"Ma'am, do you know that filing a false report with Child Protective Services is a crime?" the officer asked me.

"I do," I replied. "And I also know that abandoning a six-year-old child in a public place can be considered child endangerment."

The officers exchanged a look that communicated everything I needed to know.

"We will be paying a visit to the grandparents to discuss both the false report and this theme park incident," the lead officer promised.

They thanked me for my cooperation and apologized for the intrusion, leaving the apartment.

I watched from the window as their cruiser pulled out of the parking lot, heading straight toward my parents' suburb.

An hour later, I received an email from Kara.

Since I had blocked her number and social media, she was desperate enough to use her work email.

"The police are at Mom and Dad's house! How could you do this to your own family?"

"Mom is crying and they are threatening to charge Dad with child endangerment!"

"Call them off right now!"

I replied with a single sentence.

"I didn't call the police; you did."

I closed my laptop and felt a profound sense of justice wash over me.

They had dug their own grave out of sheer spite, and now they were furious that they had to lie in it.

I made a mental note to contact a family lawyer in the morning.

I needed to make sure their banishment from our lives was legally ironclad.
