Chapter 1 - The Long Drive

The silence on the other end of the phone was the most satisfying sound I had ever heard.
Denise did not have a witty comeback or a cruel laugh this time.
The mention of a documented incident report had finally pierced through her delusion of control.
I did not wait for her to formulate a lie.
I hung up the phone and threw it onto the passenger seat.
My knuckles were white as I gripped the steering wheel, navigating the endless stretch of highway toward the magic kingdom.
Every mile marker felt like a taunt, reminding me of the distance between me and my terrified little boy.
I thought about Elliot’s small voice trembling through the phone, the way he breathed when he was trying not to cry.
He was only six years old, wearing a backpack that was almost half his size.
He had trusted his grandmother, his grandfather, and his aunt to protect him in a crowd of thousands.
Instead, they had decided he was an inconvenience and simply walked away.
The betrayal burned in my chest, hot and suffocating, replacing my panic with a cold, focused rage.
I pulled into the Disney parking lot, flashing my hazard lights and ignoring the standard parking protocols.
I ran toward the transportation center, my chest heaving as I scanned the area for the Guest Relations building.
When I finally pushed through the glass doors, the air conditioning hit my sweat-drenched skin.
A cast member with a kind smile immediately stepped forward, asking for my name.
"I am Elliot's mother," I said, my voice cracking for the first time since the ordeal began.
The cast member nodded gently and led me toward a quiet back room away from the noise of the park.
Through the small window in the door, I saw him.
Elliot was sitting on a plush chair, clutching his Mickey backpack to his chest, staring blankly at a cartoon playing on a screen.
I pushed the door open, and his head snapped up.
"Mom!" he screamed, his voice shattering my heart into a million pieces.
May you like
I dropped to my knees as he collided with me, burying his tear-stained face into my neck.
I held him tighter than I ever had, silently promising that I would burn the world down before I let anyone hurt him again.
