Chapter 2 - The Evidence

We sat in my car in the parking lot for twenty minutes before I even put the keys in the ignition.
I let Elliot drink a juice box while I stroked his hair, waiting for his breathing to return to normal.
"Did I do something wrong, Mom?" he whispered, staring down at his small sneakers.
The question felt like a physical blow to my stomach.
"No, baby," I said firmly, lifting his chin so he had to look me in the eyes.
"You did everything perfectly by finding a safe adult and waiting for me."
"They are the ones who did something very, very wrong."
I made a quick stop at a drive-thru to get him his favorite meal, wanting to bring some comfort back to his day.
When we finally got home, I settled him on the couch with his favorite blanket and a movie.
Once I was sure he was safe and distracted, I opened my laptop.
I printed the email from Disney Guest Relations, making three separate copies.
The document was clinical, precise, and absolutely devastating to my family's fabricated narrative.
It clearly stated that the child was left intentionally, as witnessed by a cast member who heard the adults discussing leaving him.
It had the exact time they walked away and the exact time Elliot was found crying near the restrooms.
My phone started buzzing violently on the kitchen counter.
It was a text from my sister, Kara.
"Mom is having a panic attack because you threatened her. You need to apologize."
I stared at the screen, a bitter laugh escaping my lips.
They were still trying to play the victims, still trying to manipulate the narrative to make me the villain.
I did not reply to her text.

Instead, I took one of the printed copies, grabbed my car keys, and called my neighbor to come sit with Elliot.
It was time to pay my parents a visit.
