Chapter 10 - The Real Magic

Six months passed, and our lives completely transformed.

Without the constant drama and manipulation of my extended family, my apartment felt peaceful and light.

Elliot had blossomed, his anxiety fading away as he realized he was in a truly safe environment.

We established new routines, new traditions, and a bond that could never be broken.

To celebrate his seventh birthday, I asked him what he wanted to do more than anything else in the world.

He hesitated for a moment before looking up at me with hopeful eyes.

"Can we go back to Disney?" he asked softly. "Just you and me?"

My heart swelled with pride at his bravery, his willingness to face a place that held a bad memory and turn it into a good one.

"Yes, baby," I smiled. "Just you and me."

The trip was everything the first one should have been.

We rode every ride, ate entirely too much junk food, and laughed until our stomachs hurt.

I never let go of his hand in the crowds, and he never once looked back with fear.

As we stood in front of the castle watching the evening fireworks light up the sky, Elliot squeezed my fingers tight.

"This is the best day ever, Mom," he whispered over the sound of the exploding colors.

I looked down at his glowing face, knowing that I had done the right thing.

I had burned bridges, faced down my own family, and fought a brutal war to protect his innocence.

And looking at his smile, I knew I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

We didn't need them to be a family.

We were completely whole, just the two of us.
