Chapter 8 - The Rehabilitation

While Marcus was adjusting to life in a federal penitentiary, his son Ashton was facing his own consequences.
Because of his age and the severity of the assault, the juvenile court had ordered a strict intervention program.
Ashton was sent to a specialized behavioral facility for troubled youth.
There were no fancy tablets, no designer clothes, and absolutely no privileges.
He was forced to wake up at six in the morning, clean his own room, and attend intense anger management therapy.
Without his father's money to shield him, Ashton was finally forced to face the reality of his actions.
I received monthly updates from his probation officer.
The first few weeks were a disaster; Ashton threw tantrums and demanded to speak to his lawyers.
But by the third month, a profound shift began to happen.
He started participating in group therapy, finally admitting that he pushed Liam because he was deeply insecure and angry at his father's neglect.
He wrote a genuine, handwritten letter of apology to my son.
I read the letter before giving it to Liam.
It wasn't defensive, and it wasn't arrogant.
It was the voice of a confused, broken kid who was finally getting the help he actually needed.
I handed the letter to Liam, who read it silently in his bedroom.
"Are you going to forgive him?" I asked gently.
"Maybe one day," Liam said, folding the paper.

"But I'm just glad he can't hurt anyone else."
That was enough for me.
