Chapter 2 - The Arrest

I pulled my cell phone from my pocket and dialed a direct line.
"Captain Miller, this is District Attorney Sarah Vance," I said clearly into the receiver.
"I need a squad car dispatched to Crestview Preparatory Academy immediately."
"I am reporting an assault and battery, and a minor needs to be taken into custody."
Marcus lunged forward, trying to snatch the phone from my hand.
I stepped back smoothly, letting his momentum carry him into the filing cabinet.
"You cannot arrest my son!" Marcus screamed, his polished demeanor completely shattered.
"He is a minor, and it was just a playground scuffle!"
"A fractured collarbone and a concussion is not a scuffle, Marcus," I replied coldly.
"It is felony assault, and your son just confessed to it with zero remorse."
Within five minutes, the wail of police sirens pierced the quiet, elite campus.
Two uniformed officers jogged into the main office, their hands resting on their duty belts.
They stopped dead in their tracks when they recognized me standing by the desk.
"Madam DA, are you alright?" the older officer asked, immediately standing at attention.
"I am fine, Officer," I said, pointing directly at Ashton.
"That boy pushed my son off the bleachers, causing severe injuries, and then he assaulted me."
The officers didn't hesitate for a single second.
They approached Ashton, who immediately began to cry hysterically.
"Dad, do something!" Ashton wailed, hiding behind Marcus's expensive suit jacket.
"Officers, you work for me!" Marcus yelled, waving his checkbook in the air.
"I donate to the police benevolent fund every single year!"
The older officer looked at Marcus with utter disgust.
"Sir, put the checkbook away before I charge you with attempted bribery of a law enforcement official."
"You are going to step aside, or you are going to be arrested for obstructing justice."
Marcus froze, realizing that his immense wealth meant absolutely nothing in this room.
He stepped aside, letting the officers place his golden child into handcuffs.
Ashton sobbed loudly as he was led out of the office, his expensive sneakers dragging on the floor.
The headmaster hid his face in his hands, weeping as his prestigious career vanished into thin air.
I picked up the ten-thousand-dollar check Marcus had thrown at me earlier.
I slowly ripped it into tiny pieces and let them flutter down onto the mahogany desk.

"I don't need your money, Marcus," I said, looking him dead in the eye.
"I am going to take everything else from you."
