Chapter 7 - The Sentencing

The day of the sentencing was gray and rainy, fitting the somber mood of the courtroom.
The judge, a stern man with zero tolerance for white-collar crime, looked down at Marcus.
"Marcus Vance, you have manipulated the system, stolen millions, and corrupted educational institutions," the judge stated.
"Your complete lack of remorse is truly astounding."
"I hereby sentence you to twenty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole."
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery.
Marcus let out a guttural scream as the bailiffs grabbed his arms to lead him away.
"Sarah! You ruined my life!" he shrieked, fighting against the handcuffs.
"You ruined your own life, Marcus," I said softly, though I knew he couldn't hear me over his own screaming.
I packed my briefcases and walked out of the courtroom, the flashing cameras of the press lighting up the hallway.
I didn't give a statement, and I didn't smile for the cameras.
I just walked straight to my car and drove away.
The city felt different today, cleaner, lighter.
