Chapter 3 - The Hospital Promise

I left Marcus standing alone in the ruins of his arrogance.
The drive back to the hospital felt entirely different than the drive to the school.
My hands were no longer shaking with terror; they were completely steady with purpose.
I walked back into the pediatric wing, the sterile smell of iodine no longer intimidating me.
My son, Liam, was lying in his hospital bed, staring blankly at the television screen.
His right arm was secured in a heavy blue sling, and a fresh bandage covered a cut on his forehead.
"Mom?" he whispered as I walked into the room.
"I'm right here, baby," I said, pulling a chair close to his bed and taking his good hand.
"Did you talk to the headmaster?" he asked, his voice trembling slightly.
"I talked to everyone, Liam," I assured him, pressing a gentle kiss to his knuckles.
"Ashton is never going to hurt you or anyone else ever again."
Liam's eyes widened in disbelief.
"But his dad is super rich, Mom," Liam said quietly.
"He said he can buy anything he wants."
"Some things cannot be bought, sweetie," I smiled, squeezing his hand.
"Like justice, and like a mother's absolute refusal to back down."
I spent the next three hours sitting by his side, watching him finally drift off to a peaceful sleep.
My phone began to vibrate relentlessly in my coat pocket.
It was a barrage of messages from Marcus, swinging wildly between legal threats and desperate begging.
He was claiming that I was abusing my power and threatening to ruin my political career.
I turned the phone on silent and tossed it into my purse.
He had no idea that I hadn't even started fighting yet.
This wasn't just about putting a bully in juvenile detention.
This was about tearing down the entire corrupt system that Marcus had used to shield himself for years.
I pulled out my secure work tablet and began drafting a search warrant.
If Marcus thought he could threaten the District Attorney, he was about to learn a very hard lesson.
His company's financial records had always been a playground of illegal tax evasion and bribery.
