Chapter 9 - The Final Eviction

Thirty days passed in a blur of peace and quiet for Marcus and his kids.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Marcus received a text message from a former neighbor of his parents.

It was a photograph of Richard and Margaret standing on the sidewalk in front of their massive mansion.

Their designer luggage was piled haphazardly in the driveway, completely soaked by the pouring rain.

A bank representative and two police officers were standing on the porch, changing the locks on the front door.

Margaret looked incredibly frail and disheveled, her expensive makeup running down her face in dark streaks.

Richard was staring at the ground, his shoulders slumped in utter defeat, looking like a broken, pathetic old man.

They had lost the house, the cars, the country club, and every single "friend" they thought they had.

Marcus zoomed in on the photo, searching his own heart for any lingering trace of pity.

He found absolutely nothing but a cold, heavy sense of justice.

He deleted the photo and put his phone away as Ethan ran into the room, holding a colorful drawing.

"Look, Dad, I drew our family!" the young boy cheered, holding up the paper.

It featured Marcus, Chloe, Leo, and Ethan, standing in front of their house with giant smiles.

There were no grandparents in the picture, and there didn't need to be.
