Chapter 1 - The Broken Glass

The Starlight Gala was supposed to be Leah’s ticket to making next month's rent. The grand ballroom of the Belmont Hotel was a sea of suffocating opulence, glittering with diamond necklaces, bespoke tuxedos, and the ruthless elite of New York society. Leah, wearing a stiff, ill-fitting catering uniform, kept her head down, balancing a silver tray of champagne flutes.
Then, she heard the shout.
"Get your filthy hands off me, you senile old bat!"
Leah spun around. Eleanor Vance, a notorious socialite known for her venomous temper and immense inherited wealth, was glaring violently at a frail, silver-haired woman in a simple, worn cardigan. The older woman had accidentally bumped into Eleanor, spilling a drop of water onto the hem of Eleanor’s custom silk gown.
"I... I am so sorry," the elderly woman whispered, her hands trembling as she tried to dab at the dress with a napkin.
"Don't touch me!" Eleanor shrieked, shoving the old woman hard in the chest.
The elderly woman stumbled backward, her cane slipping on the polished marble. She was going to fall.
Leah didn't think. She dropped her tray. The crystal flutes shattered with a deafening crash that brought the entire gala to a dead silence. Leah dove forward, catching the frail woman just before her head could strike the unforgiving floor.
"Security!" Eleanor screamed, her face flushed with rage. "Throw this clumsy waitress and this street trash out! How did a vagrant even get in here?!"
Two massive security guards began to step forward. Leah wrapped her arms around the trembling old woman, bracing for the worst. "She’s just an old woman! It was an accident! Have some basic humanity," Leah fired back, her heart pounding in her throat.
"Humanity is for people who matter," Eleanor sneered, looking around at the silent, staring crowd. "I am a Vance. I can buy this entire hotel and burn it down for sport. Throw them out!"
"I highly doubt that."
The voice didn't shout, but it echoed with the force of a thunderclap.
The sea of billionaires parted instantly. A man stepped out of the shadows. He wore a masterfully tailored black tuxedo. He was towering, broad-shouldered, with a jawline carved from granite and eyes the color of a winter storm. He exuded an aura of absolute, terrifying power.
Eleanor’s arrogant smirk instantly vanished. The color drained from her face. "C-Caleb? Mr. Thorne?"
Caleb Thorne was the apex predator of Wall Street, a billionaire who commanded industries with a single nod. He didn't look at Eleanor. He walked straight toward Leah and the old woman on the floor. The entire ballroom held its collective breath.
"Caleb, I swear, this waitress and this vagrant ruined my dress—" Eleanor babbled.
Caleb swatted the air, silencing her instantly. He knelt gracefully on the shattered glass, his expensive suit pants uncaring of the mess. His icy eyes softened entirely as he looked at the frail woman Leah was shielding.
"Are you hurt, Mother?" Caleb asked softly.
The ballroom perished.
Eleanor looked as if she were going to faint. "M-Mother?!"
Caleb stood up slowly, turning to face Eleanor. His expression shifted from a worried son to a merciless executioner.
"You just shoved Evelyn Thorne," Caleb said, his voice a lethal, perfectly calm whisper. "The woman who founded the charity this gala is supposedly celebrating. And you just ordered her thrown out of a hotel that I own."

He snapped his fingers. His private security detail materialized from the crowd.
"Revoke the Vance family's access to all Thorne Enterprise holdings," Caleb commanded. "Liquidate our partnerships with her father’s firm. And escort her out through the service elevator. If she speaks, call the police and press charges for assault."
