Chapter 9 - The Delivery

Three weeks later.
The storm had passed, leaving a quiet, breathless calm in its wake. The news of Julian Vance's arrest had rocked the medical world. The media called him the "Vanguard Vampire." Evelyn Vance had fled to Europe in disgrace, living in a cramped apartment, her empire reduced to ashes.
I was sitting by the window in the upstate compound when the frantic knock came.
"Mrs. Eleanor," the Swiss doctor said gently. "It's time."
I rushed into the makeshift, state-of-the-art delivery suite. Clara was propped up, sweating, breathing heavily, but her eyes were clear. There was no fear in this room. There were no hidden agendas, no arrogant men playing god. There was only safety, light, and love.
I took her hand. It was strong.
"I can't do it, Mom," she cried out as a contraction hit.
"You can. You are the strongest woman I know, Clara. You survived a monster. You can bring an angel into this world. Push!"
For two hours, we worked together. The medical team was flawless, supportive, and kind. There were no threats. No mentions of 'anomalies.'
And then, a sharp, beautiful cry pierced the air.
The doctor smiled behind her mask. "A healthy, perfect baby boy."
They placed him on Clara’s chest. The bruises on her collarbone had faded to faint yellow shadows, almost invisible now, replaced by the warm, radiant glow of new life. Clara sobbed, burying her face in the baby's soft hair.

"He's safe," Clara whispered, looking up at me. "We're safe."
"Always," I promised, kissing her forehead.
