Chapter 1 - The Lion’s Den

The door to Examination Room A opened with a soft, pneumatic hiss. Dr. Julian Vance stood by the ultrasound machine, the very picture of modern medical excellence. His tailored scrubs hugged his athletic frame, and his dark, perfectly swept hair framed a smile that had charmed million-dollar donors and terrified young interns alike.
"Eleanor," Julian said, his voice dripping with honeyed warmth. He stepped forward, opening his arms. "What a wonderful surprise. I didn't realize you were joining us for the final scan."
I didn't flinch. I didn't recoil. I stepped into his embrace, letting his arms wrap around my shoulders, feeling the sheer physical strength he possessed. The strength he had used to batter my pregnant daughter.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, Julian," I replied, my voice smooth as glass. "A grandmother's privilege."
Clara moved stiffly toward the examination table. Julian’s eyes darted toward her, a microscopic tightening at the corners of his mouth betraying his annoyance. He liked total control. My presence was an uncalculated variable.
"Let's check on our little champion, shall we?" Julian murmured, dimming the lights.
As he applied the gel to Clara’s swollen abdomen, his sleeve rode up, revealing the edge of a heavy, silver-buckled leather belt. The exact shape of the bruises hidden beneath Clara's silk robe. My fingernails dug into the leather of my handbag.
The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the fetal heartbeat filled the room. Clara let out a shaky breath, tears pooling in her eyes. Julian stroked her hair—a gesture that looked tender to the outside world, but I saw Clara's knuckles turn white as she gripped the side rails.
"Perfect," Julian declared, wiping the gel away with practiced efficiency. "BP is slightly elevated, Clara, darling. We discussed your stress levels. You need to focus on remaining calm."
It was a threat wrapped in medical advice.
"She has nothing to stress about anymore, Julian," I said, smiling pleasantly. "In fact, I've decided Clara should spend the final weeks resting at my estate in the Hamptons. Sea air. Zero stress."
Julian’s smile froze. "Eleanor, while I appreciate the offer, Clara’s care is under my direct supervision here at Vanguard. She needs to be close to the surgical suite. We can't risk a... complication."

"Oh, Vanguard has an excellent transport team," I countered, pulling out my phone. "But let's not argue about logistics today. Today is about a healthy heartbeat."
I watched his eyes narrow in the dim light. He thought he was the smartest man in the room. He was about to learn a very painful lesson in corporate food chains.
