Chapter 3 - The Extraction

Midnight at Vanguard Memorial was usually quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of life-support monitors and the soft padding of nurses' shoes.
Clara was admitted to the VIP maternity suite for overnight observation—Julian's mandated "precaution" to keep her trapped after my little stunt in the exam room. He had stationed a security guard at the end of the hall, a man on his personal payroll.
At 12:15 AM, the fire alarms in the East Wing blared.
It wasn't a real fire, of course. A simple localized system override executed by Marcus’s tech team.
Chaos erupted. Nurses rushed out of rooms. The security guard jogged toward the stairwell to investigate the source of the smoke alarm.
The moment the hall cleared, the door to Clara’s suite swung open. Two men in unmarked, dark EMT uniforms stepped in. They didn't speak. They moved with military precision, loading a terrified Clara onto a specialized transport gurney.
"Mom?" Clara whimpered, clinging to the sheets.
I stepped out from behind the EMTs, dressed in a black trench coat. "I'm right here, darling. We're leaving."
"Julian will check the cameras—"
"The cameras in this wing have been running on a fifteen-minute loop since eleven o'clock," I said, taking her hand. "By the time he figures out you're gone, we'll be ghosts."
We wheeled her out through the private service elevator—a perk of owning the building's blueprints. A stealth ambulance was waiting in the loading dock.
As the doors closed and the vehicle sped off into the Manhattan night, Clara finally let out a sob she had been holding in for months. She buried her face in my chest, shaking uncontrollably.

"He's going to kill us, Mom. He said if I ever ran, he'd find me."
"Let him try," I whispered, stroking her hair. "He thinks he's hunting a rabbit. He doesn't realize he just stepped into a tiger's cage."
