Chapter 8 - The Final Confrontation

The heavy steel door to Julian’s cell groaned open, but it was not a guard who entered.

Clara rolled her wheelchair into the center of the gloomy room, the sleek mechanics of the chair purring quietly.

Julian looked up from the floor, his face bruised and swollen from his altercation with the guard.

He scrambled to his feet, trying to put on the charm that had manipulated her for a decade.

“Clara, sweetheart, you have to help me. They’re torturing me in here,” he pleaded, holding his hands out.

Clara looked at him with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“You look pathetic, Julian.”

The coldness in her voice made him stop in his tracks, realizing his charm was completely useless.

“I loved you!” he shouted, a desperate tear tracking down his bruised cheek.

“You loved the empire,” Clara corrected him smoothly.

“You loved the power, the prestige, and the money that my family built from the ground up.”

She pressed a button on her armrest, and a holographic projection projected from the chair, displaying a legal document.

“This is a confession of conspiracy to commit murder, embezzlement, and corporate espionage,” Clara stated.

“You are going to sign it, and in return, my mother will hand you over to the FBI instead of burying you in the woods.”

Julian stared at the document, his entire body trembling with rage and defeat.

“If I sign that, I’ll spend the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary,” he whispered in horror.

“Yes, you will,” Clara agreed, a genuinely beautiful smile gracing her lips for the first time in weeks.

“And I will make a massive donation to the prison warden every year to ensure you are placed in the most miserable cell available.”

Julian realized he had absolutely no leverage left, no allies to call, and no hidden funds to save him.

With shaking hands, he took the digital pen from Clara and signed his own life away.
