Chapter 6 - The Desperate Gamble

Desperation is a dangerous catalyst, and Julian was nothing if not a survivor.
When a guard brought him his daily ration of tasteless food, Julian noticed a momentary lapse in the man’s attention.
With blinding speed, Julian lunged forward, smashing the heavy plastic tray into the guard’s face.
He managed to rip the guard’s encrypted communication device from his tactical vest before the man could recover.
Julian scrambled back into the corner of the cell, punching in a sequence of numbers he had memorized years ago for an absolute emergency.
The line rang twice before a gravelly voice answered on the other end.
“I need an extraction team, right now,” Julian whispered frantically, keeping his eyes on the groaning guard.
“Sterling? The whole world is looking for you. You’re radioactive,” the mercenary replied, sounding annoyed.
“I have five million in uncut diamonds hidden in a safety deposit box in Zurich under a fake name!” Julian lied desperately.
“Get me out of this bunker and kill Victoria, and it’s all yours.”
There was a long, excruciating pause on the other end of the line.
“Send me the coordinates of the bunker,” the mercenary finally agreed.
Julian quickly transmitted the GPS location using the stolen device, a manic grin spreading across his face.
He tossed the radio aside as the guard finally staggered to his feet, pulling a stun baton from his belt.
“You’re a dead man,” the guard growled, advancing on him.
Julian didn't care about the brutal beating that followed, because he knew his salvation was already on the way.
