Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY

The highly anticipated criminal trials became a massive, highly publicized international media spectacle.

Arthur desperately tried to use his vast wealth to buy the most expensive defense lawyers in the country, but my financial freeze left him completely bankrupt.

Silas, ever the pathetic coward, immediately turned state's evidence and testified against Arthur in a desperate, crying bid for a lighter sentence.

His cowardly betrayal didn't work to save him from the wrath of the justice system.

The shocked jury listened in absolute, horrified silence to the crystal-clear recorded confession of the hitman and the damning medical examiner's report.

They were both swiftly convicted of first-degree, premeditated murder and sentenced to consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

I sat stoically in the front row of the crowded courtroom every single day, wearing my sharpest, most intimidating designer suits.

I wanted them to look at me every single day and know exactly who had single-handedly destroyed their lives.

When the stern judge finally handed down the final, crushing sentence, Arthur turned around to look directly at me.

His tired eyes were completely hollow, filled with bitter, overwhelming regret and unadulterated, helpless hatred.

I didn't smile at him, and I didn't offer him a single ounce of gloating satisfaction.

I simply stood up, gracefully adjusted my tailored coat, and walked out of the heavy courtroom doors with my head held incredibly high.

Justice had finally been served in the most brutal, absolute way possible.
