Chapter 1 - THE MIDNIGHT AUTOPSY

I slipped out through the heavy mahogany doors of the estate, my black mourning coat pulling tightly against the bitter wind.

The midnight air was freezing, but the ice in my veins was infinitely colder.

I did not take my usual sports car, knowing Arthur’s sophisticated security team would easily track the vehicle's GPS signature.

Instead, I walked two long miles down the dark, muddy country road until I reached a rural truck stop.

From there, I paid an unsuspecting local taxi driver in pure cash to take me directly to the county morgue.

The drive felt like an eternity, every passing streetlamp casting long, sinister shadows across the back seat of the cab.

Dr. Evelyn Hayes was waiting for me at the heavily reinforced steel backdoor of the municipal facility.

She looked utterly exhausted, her blue medical scrubs heavily wrinkled and her dark eyes visibly bloodshot.

“Thank God you made it without being followed, Clara,” she whispered frantically, quickly pulling me inside the dark corridor.

The sterile, chemical smell of industrial bleach and harsh formaldehyde immediately filled my lungs, making my stomach churn.

Evelyn led me down a long, flickering fluorescent hallway to the highly secured autopsy bay number four.

“Arthur’s men have been calling the local precinct every single hour, aggressively demanding the ashes,” she said, her voice shaking with adrenaline.

“I forged a complex transfer document claiming the state health board needed to conduct an emergency toxicological review.”

She stopped in front of a cold stainless steel table covered by a thick, heavy white sheet.

My breath hitched violently in my throat as she gently pulled the sterile fabric back to reveal my husband.

Julian’s handsome face was tragically pale, his soft lips bruised, but he still looked like the extraordinary man I loved.

“He absolutely didn’t drown, Clara,” Evelyn stated firmly, pointing a gloved finger to severe, dark bruising around his neck.

“The official police report claims he accidentally hit his head on the boat and tragically fell into the lake.”

“But these deep contusions indicate severe manual strangulation long before he ever touched the water.”

I reached deep into my wool coat pocket and pulled out the heavy, custom-engraved onyx cufflink.

“I found this locked tightly in his hand, Evelyn.”

She gasped loudly, her eyes widening in sheer horror as she immediately recognized the expensive, bespoke piece of jewelry.

“Silas,” she breathed out, putting the terrifying pieces together in a fraction of a second.

“Julian fought back with absolutely everything he had,” I said, my voice eerily cold and perfectly steady.

“He tore this right off Silas’s sleeve before they brutally overpowered him and dumped him at the hospital.”

Evelyn quickly grabbed her camera and took high-definition photographs of the defensive wounds, the bruising, and the bloody cufflink.

“I am sending these encrypted files directly to a secure federal server, completely bypassing the corrupt local police department.”

I reached out and touched Julian’s freezing cheek one last time, making a silent, unbreakable vow to the only man I had ever loved.

“Hide his body where Arthur can never find him, Evelyn, and do not answer your phone for anyone.”

“I am going to burn their entire multi-billion-dollar empire straight to the ground.”
