Chapter 6 - THE AIRFIELD INTERCEPT

The private, highly exclusive airfield was located twenty dark, desolate miles outside the city limits.

When I finally arrived, the sleek, white corporate jet was already idling loudly on the wet tarmac, its engines whining.

Arthur and Silas were standing nervously near the metal boarding stairs, yelling frantically at the terrified pilot to hurry.

They were carrying several heavy aluminum briefcases, no doubt stuffed with whatever untraceable liquid cash they could manage to steal.

I slammed hard on the brakes, drifting the expensive sports car sideways to completely block the jet’s forward path.

I stepped out into the freezing, pouring rain, holding the loaded pistol casually at my side.

Arthur looked up through the rain, his arrogant face contorting in sheer, unadulterated disbelief.

“Clara!” he shouted loudly over the deafening roar of the jet engines.

“Your expensive assassin failed miserably, Arthur,” I yelled back, walking steadily and fearlessly toward them.

Silas reached desperately inside his tailored cashmere jacket, panicking wildly as he pulled out a small, silver handgun.

“Don't even think about doing it, Silas,” I warned him, raising my weapon with steady, practiced military precision.

“You shoot me, and you will spend the rest of your miserable, pathetic life rotting in a maximum-security cell.”

Loud, wailing police sirens began to echo in the distance, growing exponentially louder by the second.

Evelyn had successfully contacted the highest levels of the federal authorities, and they were rapidly descending on the airstrip.

Arthur dropped his heavy metal briefcase, the latches popping open to reveal massive stacks of illegal, high-denomination bearer bonds.

“We can easily make a lucrative deal, Clara,” Arthur pleaded desperately, his lifelong arrogance completely shattered in an instant.

“I can legally give you absolutely everything you ever wanted, all the money in the world.”

“I already had absolutely everything I ever wanted in this entire world,” I replied, my voice breaking slightly for the very first time.

“And you selfishly murdered him for a company you didn't even know how to run.”

Silas suddenly lost his nerve entirely, dropping his silver gun onto the tarmac and running blindly toward the high perimeter fence.

He didn't make it very far before the cavalry finally arrived.
