Chapter 9 - The Shield

Trust is not rebuilt in a night. It is built in terrifying, fragile increments.
Over the next six months, Julian Vance fundamentally changed his life. He stepped down as the active CEO of Vance Logistics, taking a role as Chairman, drastically reducing his hours. He didn't push Elena for romance. He didn't buy extravagant gifts to win Nora over.
Instead, he showed up.
He was there for Saturday morning pancakes. He sat on the tiny plastic chairs at Nora’s preschool parent-teacher conferences. He helped Elena paint the gallery walls before a new exhibition. He proved, day in and day out, that he was no longer the man who would walk away.
But Silas was not done.
Facing twenty years in federal prison for corporate fraud, Silas grew desperate. Out on bail, he managed to bypass Julian's security and cornered Elena in the alley behind her gallery one evening as she was taking out the trash.
"You ruined my life," Silas hissed, stepping out of the shadows, looking gaunt and deranged. "You poisoned him against me."
Elena didn't scream. She stood her ground, her heart hammering. "You ruined your own life, Silas. Stay away from me."
"I'm going to burn this gallery to the ground," Silas threatened, taking a step closer, pulling a heavy wrench from his coat. "If I go down, you go down."
Before Silas could take another step, a massive, terrifying force hit him from the side.
Julian, who had arrived to pick Elena up for dinner, had seen Silas slip into the alley. Julian tackled his brother into the brick wall, pinning him by the throat. The billionaire was completely gone; in his place was a lethal, apex protector.
"I told you," Julian roared, his voice shaking the alley walls, "if you ever looked at her again, I would end you."
"Julian! Stop!" Elena cried, grabbing his arm. "He's not worth it! Let the police handle it!"
Julian breathed heavily, his eyes wild with fury, his hand tightening around his brother's throat. Silas gasped for air, terrified.
Julian looked back at Elena. He saw the fear in her eyes, not of Silas, but for Julian’s soul.
Slowly, Julian released his grip. He let Silas drop to the pavement, coughing and sputtering.
Julian pulled his phone out and dialed his security chief. "Victor. Silas violated his bail conditions. He's in the alley behind the gallery. Have the police here in two minutes."
Julian didn't look at his brother again. He turned to Elena, pulling her fiercely into his arms, burying his face in her hair. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
May you like
"I'm okay," Elena breathed, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist, feeling the frantic beating of his heart. She realized then that the Julian who had walked away five years ago was dead. This man would burn the world down to keep her safe.
"I've got you," Julian whispered into the night. "I will always have you."
