Chapter 8 - The Slow Thaw

Julian sat on Elena’s couch wrapped in a heavy blanket, shivering as he held a mug of hot tea. The silence in the apartment was deafening.

"Silas is going to federal prison," Julian said quietly, staring into the mug. "I handed him over to the authorities tonight. I stripped him of everything."

Elena sat in the armchair opposite him. She didn't offer comfort. She simply absorbed the information. "You protected him your whole life."

"I protected a lie," Julian corrected, looking up at her with red, exhausted eyes. "You were the only truth I ever had. And I let him poison it."

A soft padding of footsteps interrupted them.

Nora walked out of the hallway, rubbing her eyes, clutching a stuffed rabbit. "Mommy? I heard crying."

Julian froze entirely. He stopped breathing. He looked at the tiny, beautiful girl in the unicorn pajamas. His daughter.

Nora looked at the strange man on the couch. "Who are you?"

Julian’s eyes filled with tears again. He looked at Elena, silently begging for permission, terrified to step out of line.

Elena swallowed hard. She could be cruel. She had every right to be cruel. But she looked at her daughter, and she looked at the broken man who had finally chosen truth over blood.

"Nora," Elena said softly, kneeling down and pulling the little girl close. "This is... this is Julian. He’s... he’s your father."

Nora tilted her head, studying Julian with intense, dark eyes that perfectly mirrored his own. She didn't look scared. She looked curious.

She walked slowly over to the couch. Julian put the mug down, his hands shaking so violently he had to clasp them together.

"You look like me," Nora stated matter-of-factly.

Julian let out a wet, broken laugh. "I do. You have my eyes."

"Are you sad?" she asked, noticing his tears.

"I was," Julian whispered, desperately fighting the urge to pull her into his arms, respecting her boundaries. "But I'm looking at you, and I think I'm the luckiest man in the whole world."

May you like

Nora thought about this for a moment. Then, she reached out and patted his knee with her tiny hand. "It's okay. Mommy makes good tea when I'm sad."

Julian completely broke down, hiding his face in his hands as he wept. Elena watched him from the armchair, the thick ice around her own heart finally beginning to show the first, microscopic signs of a thaw.
