Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Favorite Son

The executive boardroom was a sprawling expanse of glass and obsidian, hovering fifty stories above the sleeping city. When Silas walked in, expecting a late-night strategy session, he found Julian sitting alone at the head of the massive table.
The room was dark, illuminated only by the city lights filtering through the windows.
"Julian," Silas said, loosening his tie. "What's going on? My keycard didn't work on the executive elevator. Security had to let me up."
"Sit down, Silas," Julian commanded.
Silas chuckled nervously, sensing the dangerous shift in the atmosphere. He pulled out a chair. "Did the Munich deal hit a snag? I told you I handled the offshore—"
"I know exactly how you handled the offshore accounts," Julian interrupted softly.
He pressed a button on a remote. The massive presentation screen on the wall flickered to life. It didn't show logistics projections. It showed a web of bank transfers. Cayman Island accounts. Shell companies.
And right in the center, a scanned copy of a fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer to a private investigator.
Silas went completely pale. The arrogant smirk melted off his face, leaving behind a terrified, cornered animal.
"Julian," Silas stammered, his eyes darting around the room as if looking for an exit. "I can explain. The shell companies... it was a tax strategy! I was trying to protect our liquid assets—"
"You stole eighty million dollars from my company," Julian said, his voice deadly quiet. "But I could have forgiven that. I could have looked past the money. Money is just paper."
Julian stood up, slowly walking down the length of the table. He stopped right beside Silas, towering over him.
"You took my wife," Julian whispered, the raw agony finally breaking through his icy facade. "You paid a photographer to frame the only woman I ever loved. You let me walk away from my own flesh and blood. You let my daughter grow up for five years without a father."
"She was ruining you!" Silas suddenly shouted, a desperate, ugly defense mechanism kicking in. "She was looking into the accounts! She was going to figure out what I was doing! You were soft with her, Julian! You would have chosen her over me!"
Julian stared at his brother. He didn't see the boy he had protected. He saw a parasite.
"You are absolutely right," Julian said, his voice dropping to a terrifying absolute. "I would have chosen her."
Julian leaned down, resting his hands on the table, boxing Silas in.
"As of tonight, you are dead to me," Julian stated. "I have already transferred the evidence of your embezzlement to the SEC and the FBI. Your accounts are frozen. Your assets will be seized. You will go to federal prison, Silas. And if you ever speak Elena's name, or look in the direction of my daughter again, I will ensure that the prison you go to is one where you do not survive."

Silas began to hyperventilate, tears streaming down his face. "Julian, please! We're brothers! You can't do this! Mom will be destroyed!"
"Mom has one son now," Julian said, turning his back on him. "Get out of my building before I throw you through the window."
