Chapter 7 - The Penance

It was raining. A freezing, relentless Boston downpour that soaked through clothing and chilled the bone.
Elena was in her apartment above the gallery, reading a bedtime story to Nora. When the little girl finally fell asleep, Elena walked into the living room, pouring herself a cup of tea.
A sharp knock at the heavy street-level door echoed up the stairs.
Elena frowned. It was past midnight. She checked the security monitor.
Standing on the sidewalk, completely exposed to the torrential rain, without an umbrella or a coat, was Julian Vance. His bespoke suit was ruined, plastered to his body. His dark hair was plastered to his forehead. He looked completely shattered.
Elena’s breath caught. She walked downstairs and cracked the heavy door, keeping the security chain engaged.
"Julian," she said, her voice hard, despite the shock of seeing him in such a state. "What are you doing here? I will call the police."
"Leo Rossi," Julian choked out. His teeth were chattering, but he didn't seem to notice the freezing rain. "He's your cousin."
Elena froze.
"I know," Julian whispered, his voice cracking, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "I know about Silas. I know about the investigator. I know he framed you. Elena... I know everything."
Elena stared at him through the crack in the door. For five years, she had dreamed of this exact moment. She had dreamed of Julian realizing his massive, catastrophic mistake. She had imagined feeling triumphant.
But looking at the broken, sobbing man in the rain, she didn't feel triumph. She just felt an overwhelming, crushing sadness for the family they could have been.
"You knew?" Elena asked, her voice trembling. "And what does that change, Julian? Does that give me back the night I stood in our living room and begged you to believe me? Does that give Nora the father who wasn't there when she took her first steps?"
"No," Julian sobbed, falling to his knees on the wet concrete. The billionaire, the apex predator of Wall Street, completely surrendered. He pressed his forehead against the heavy wooden door. "It changes nothing. I am a monster. I let my blind loyalty to my brother blind me to the truth of your heart. I am not here to ask you to take me back, Elena. I know I don't deserve that. I just... I couldn't live another second without you knowing that I know you were innocent. That you were perfect. And I broke us."
Elena looked down at him. Her heart, heavily guarded by five years of independence, ached violently.

She slowly reached up, unlatched the security chain, and opened the door.
"Get inside," she whispered. "Before you freeze to death."
