Chapter 9 - The Choice

Dominic burst into the safe room, bleeding from a cut on his forehead. "They’re at the doors."

He looked at Maya, then at his grandfather. He had a gun in his hand, ready to hold off the invaders.

"Give me the files," he commanded.

Maya held them, but she didn't give them to him. She looked at him. "Use these to get out, Dominic. You have enough money in offshore accounts to start over. Don't fight for a throne that’s made of blood."

It was a moment of supreme vulnerability. Dominic looked at the woman who had saved his grandfather, the woman who had seen his worst and stayed. He made a choice. He didn't fight the invasion; he triggered the estate's lockdown protocol, sealing the house like a vault, and used the secret tunnels underneath to get them all out.
